Welcome to San Francisco
A.  San Francisco was born as a result of the Gold Rush. In 1848 a man named James Wilson Marshall suddenly saw something bright and yellow in a river not far from his house. Looking more carefully he discovered small pieces of gold. Word of this discovery got around, and a few months later, the whole world knew about the hidden gold of California. Very soon thousands of people 'forty-niners', as they were called were on the way to California.
B.  Those forty-niners who went to California by ships passed through San Francisco. Many of them returned to San Francisco with or without gold. By the end of 1849, San Francisco was unrecognizable. Before the Gold Rush it was a settlement of 200 people. By the summer of 1849, there were 5,000, and by 1850 the number had risen to 25,000. Eight years later it was a city of 50,000!
C.  In 1906, there was a terrible earthquake in San Francisco. It destroyed about 5,000 buildings immediately. Most of the other buildings in the city burnt down in the great fire that followed it. Many people died or lost their homes. It took 9 years to rebuild the city. There was another big earthquake in San Francisco in 1989 and everyone knows that one day, perhaps very soon, there will be another. But people continue living in San Francisco because life there is fun.
D.  San Francisco is a city of hills Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Pacific Heights, Telegraph Hill... In fact, San Francisco has 43 hills! So if you live in San Francisco, you have plenty of exercise! The views from the hills are very beautiful. One of the best places to see nearly all of the city is from the top of Twin Peaks, the city's second and third highest hills. Another great place to see the city is from Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill.
E.  San Francisco is famous for its cable cars. The first car climbed up Nob Hill in 1843. It was driven by Andrew Hallidie, an engineer from Britain who built it. Soon there were more and more cable cars in San Francisco. Cable cars run along three different routes every ten minutes. They begin working at 6 o'clock in the morning and continue until 12 : 30 night. There is an interesting Cable Car Museum at 120 Mason Street.
F.  The symbol of San Francisco is the famous Golden Gate Bridge. You can see it in many photos, posters and postcards of the city. This beautiful orange suspension bridge is 1280 metres long and is one of the longest bridges in the world. 100,000 cars travel across it every day. You can cross the bridge by car or by bike. Many people want to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Indeed, this is a wonderful experience. You can see the Pacific Ocean on one side and the San Francisco Bay on the other.
G. If you are on the Golden Gate Bridge and it isn't foggy, you can enjoy a great view of the city skyline and also see Alcatraz, a famous American prison. Until 1963, the island of Alcatraz was a maximum-security prison, holding famous crime bosses such as A1 Capone. Prisoners once named the Alcatraz's corridors after famous American streets (New York's Broadway or Park Avenue, Los Angeles' Sunset Boulevard, etc.). Now it's a museum. About 1.5 million tourists visit it each year. You can see real cells (luckily, without dangerous criminals).

Walter Disney was born on the 5th of December, 1901, in Chicago. At that time Chicago was a very dangerous place to live in, and the family moved to the country where they bought a small farm.
Living on the farm was the happiest time in Walt's life and it greatly influenced his interests. He loved animals and could spend hours watching their habits. He even brought up a piglet. His name was Skinny and he followed Walt wherever he went.
At that time he started drawing. His parents often bought him albums for drawing and colour pencils. But one of Disney's first pictures was made in coal on a white wall of their recently painted house when his parents were away.
When Walt was 10 years old, the Disneys moved to Kansas City. Walt and his brother Roy helped their father in his new business. They had to get up at half past three in the morning to deliver morning newspapers and not to be late for school. Soon nineteen-year-old Roy got tired of it and decided to live and work on his uncle's farm. So Walt had to deliver the newspapers himself. On Saturday mornings he took classes at the Kansas City Art Institute.
Walt wanted to become an artist, but after the USA joined World War I in April 1917, he volunteered as a Red Cross ambulance driver in France. He was seventeen when he returned home and got a job in an art studio in Kansas City. Later Disney made animated commercials at tbe Kansas City Advertising Company. He was so successful that he decided to found his own cartoon company.
With the help of a few young animators Disney made several six-minute films showing famous fairy-tales Cinderella, Little Red Riding-Hood and some others. The twenty-year-old president of the new company thought these films would be a success and he would make a fortune. But the cartoons were not profitable, and soon Walt went bankrupt.
And still Disney was not going to give up. He decided to try his luck in Hollywood, and in 1923, with forty dollars in his pockets, Walt went to Los Angeles. That year Walt and his brother Roy founded their own cartoon company in Hollywood and made a series of cartoons called Alice in Cartoon- land. These cartoons combined a 'live' Alice with cartoon characters.
As they didn't have enough money to pay the assistants, Walt had to do everything he was a playwright, a director, an animator.
Alice in Cartoonland was very successful and Walt decided to move on. He invented a hero for his new series a rabbit. Everybody liked Rabbit Oswald and Disney went to New York to make new plans. But a small line in the contract with Walt's New York distributor ruined everything. It turned out that the owner of Oswald was the distributor and he did not let Walter make any more cartoons with Oswald!
Disney was thinking about a new hero that would be better than Rabbit Oswald. When Walt was a boy he had a mouse called Mortimer, and Walt used to give him pieces of cheese. 'A
mouse as a new cartoon hero seems a good idea', thought Disney. This is how Mickey Mouse was born.

1.  The prophecy (предсказание) of the highest church post
2.   The prophecies of fatal events
3.   Difficulties of interpretation
4.   The ways of making predictions
5.   The fans of Nostradamus
6.   Unfulfilled predictions
7.   Inability to save the dearest people
8.   Printed heritage
A.  Nostradamus' real name was Michel de Nostradame. He was born on the 14th of December, 1503, in a small town in southern France. As a child he was very good at mathematics and astrology. At the age of 15, he became a university student, but the University was soon closed because of the plague. Nostradamus travelled across the country and helped victims of the plague using his own methods. It is said that he invented a 'rose pill' that could protect people against the plague. Sadly, his first wife and two small children later died of the plague.
B.  Nostradamus continued to learn and practise medicine, but he also got interested in astrology. Soon legends began to grow about his strange ability to predict the future. One story said that when Nostradamus was in Italy, he met a monk. He immediately went down on his knees and called the monk 'Your Holiness'. About 45 years later the monk became Pope.
C.    Nostradamus realized that he had an unusual gift and started writing down his predictions in the form of four-line poems. He quickly became famous, and even Queen Catherine de Medici wanted to meet him. Nostradamus predicted the death of her husband, King Henry II, and in 1559 his prediction came true'. It is said that Nostradamus even predicted his own death! When his assistant wished him goodnight on the let of July, 1566, Nostradamus said: 'You won't find me alive at sunrise'. He was found dead on the 2nd of July.
D.   All in all, Nostradamus wrote over 900 predictions about the future of the world. They were published in two books called The Centuries, which were published in 1555 and 1558. Nostradamus' four-line poems predicted events from the mid-1500s until the end of the world. People have studied and interpreted his predictions since the sixteenth century!
E.   The problem with these predictions is that they are very vague and can mean many things. Nostradamus made his poems difficult to understand by using words from Latin, French, Greek and Italian. They have anagrams and riddles and are not placed in chronological order. This was because he didn't want the Church to accuse him of being a magician or a heretic.
F.   But just how did Nostradamus predict the future? He worked with ancient books, he studied the stars using his knowledge of astrology. He also looked into a bowl of water until he had an inspiration or saw an image. But his favourite technique for predicting was gazing into a crystal ball. He fell under a trance for two hours and more. When he came out of the trance he would find that he had written a quatrain of the events he had seen.
G. Many of his predictions seem true. But some of the events never happened. Let's take a look at this famous prediction:
'Like the great king Angolmois
The year 1999, seventh month,
The great king of terror will come from the sky,
At this time, Mars will reign for the good cause'.
Just imagine how people felt in 1999! Some said that Nostradamus predicted the end of the world, others thought that he spoke about an invasion from outer space. But nothing happened.

Mr. Parker liked the Hotel Pino d'Oro at once. Unlike other hotels in Majorca, it was small and peaceful. It stood on the edge of the sea and the view was breathtaking.
At a quarter to ten, Mr. Parker went out onto a small terrace. There were four tables there. At the nearest sat a family of father and mother and two elderly daughters Germans. At the corner of the terrace, sat what were clearly an English mother and son. The woman was about fifty-five and the young man was about twenty-five. They made little jokes together and seemed to be on very good terms.
As they talked, her eye met that of Mr. Parker and he felt that he had been recognized as English.
In the afternoon, Mr. Parker, Mrs. Chester and her son Basil were having coffee together and chatting. '     ,
Mr. Parker found Basil Chester a very pleasant young man. He called Mr. Parker 'sir' and listened politely to what the older man said. Mrs. Chester talked about flowers and the growing of them, of how expensive France had become, and the difficulty of getting good afternoon tea.
When the young man rose from his seat and said that he was going out, Mr. Parker noticed a slight tremor on his mother's lips. But she immediately took control of herself and talked pleasantly on the above-mentioned topics.
Little by little she began to talk of Basil of how well he had done at school, of how everyone liked him, of how proud his father would have been of the boy had he lived. 'Of course I always urge him to be with young people, but he seems to prefer being with me.'
'Oh, but there are so many young men here!'
At that, he noticed, Mrs. Chester stiffened.
On the following day Basil said to Mr. Parker
'I'm awfully glad you turned up here, sir. My mother likes to have a talk with you in the evenings. As a matter of fact I've got some friends here, but I don't think my mother approves of them. She is very old-fashioned. Even girls in trousers shock her!'
'I see,' said Mr. Parker.
That evening, after coffee, Mrs. Chester said to Mr. Parker, 'Will you come into the little salon, Mr. Parker. There's something I want to tell you.'
As the door of the little salon closed behind them, she sat down and burst into tears. 'My boy! You must save him, Mr. Parker. We must save him. It's breaking my heart! This girl is dreadful. She drinks, she swears, she wears no clothes to speak of.'
'Is the young lady, by any chance, the one who had tea with you yesterday?'
'You saw her? Terrible! He wants to marry this girl Betty Gregg they're engaged.'
'It's gone as far as that?'
'Yes, Mr. Parker, you must do something. You must get my boy out of this disastrous marriage! His whole life will be ruined.'(By A. Christie)

Choosing a profession

Choosing a profession.
Whatever the country, at 15 or 16 young people have to make a choice. There are several options. They can stay on at school for two more years and their good final exam results make it possible for pupils to go on to further further education. They can go to a college or a vocational school as well. There young people can study for a vocational diploma. Not many young people go straight out to look for a job after school.
Usually at 15 or 16 young people have a plan for a career, they know what to do after leaving school. Choosing your future profession or a trade is a difficult choice but a very important one. Many young people are inclined to choose a " popular" profession and they are sure this is just what they want. Choosing an occupation takes time and there are a lot of things you have to consider. Different jobs require different personal qualities.  You should consider what you are good at, whether you have a calling for something particular. You should decide whether you want to deal with people, animals or machines. To be successful when you deal with people means to be communicative well- wishing, sympathetic and capable of deep feelings and empathy. Such jobs as an  accountants, economist, programmer need accuracy, patience, self-discipline  and concentration.  If you have an inclination for activities based on artistic imagination, you should be capable of creative work, have to have a fine artistic taste and a developed sense of aesthetic, have graphic and image bearing thinking.
And the last but not the least is that you should think of the situation on the job market, you must be sure that the job you have chosen is in demand and you'll be able to gain employment.
