3.   Pros and cons
4.   Unbearable conditions
5.   Early life
6.   The founder of the science of evolution
7.   The call of distant lands
8.    Unfulfilled wish of Charles's father
Charles Robert Darwin
A.   Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury on the 12ih of February, 1809. His mother died when he was eight, so he was brought up. by his sister and his father Robert, who was a doctor. Charles later said that he greatly loved his father, but most people found Dr Robert (as he was called) hard to get along with and a bit scary. Dr Robert was so large and so strict that people usually fell silent when he came into the room.
B.   Charles went to school in Shrewsbury, but he hated it! He didn't pay attention in class, he copied from his fellow pupils and he forgot everything he had learned after a day or two. His school was really an awful place. Boys were beaten for not doing their homework or for getting bad marks on tests! There were no toilets or bathrooms in the building, and all the boys had to use chamber pots as toilets. These were kept under their beds even when they were full.
C.    When he was 16, Charles went to Edinburgh University to study medicine. His father wanted him to become a doctor, but Charles didn't like medicine. He found the lectures dull, he hated the operations he had to watch he was sick at the Sight of blood. Charles didn't quite dare tell his father how much he hated medicine, but he got his sister to do it for him. His unhappy father said that he could become a clergyman instead, if he liked.
D.                Once a friend invited him on a scientific expedition on his ship called the Beagle. Charles really wanted to go, but he wasn't sure that his father would approve. And he was quite right. However, his dad said, 'If you can find any man of common sense who advises you to go I'll let you go'. Charles's uncle agreed to help and talked his father into the idea. And so, without any clear idea about what he wanted to do with his life Charles went on a scientific expedition.
E.              It was a 5-year expedition to unknown places. Although Charles wasn't actually a scientist and he was terribly seasick, he had a wonderful time on his voyage. When the Beagle arrived at the Cape Verde Islands, Charles set foot in a tropical forest for the first time. And he was amazed by the huge variety of animals and plants. He started to collect like crazy butterflies, spiders, beetles, shells he loved everything.
F.               In 1935, the Beagle landed at the Galapagos Islands where Charles saw pant tortoises and other interesting creatures. Charles found that each of the islands had its own variety of tortoise and finch. The animals on different islands were a little bit different. It seemed very strange to Charles. According to the accepted view at the time, all animal species were created by God for ever. So God must have designed slightly different animals for each island...
G.                Charles didn't spend all his time thinking about science. In 1837, he started thinking about getting married. After all, he was already 29 years old! Being a good scientist, he made a list of reasons why he should or should not get married. He would have less time to study evolution, but he would have a friend in old age. He would have fewer expeditions, but he would have kids... Looking over the list, he decided that the time had come to get married after all.

(Т.М. Reid)
Maurice Gerald reached the stream and finally fell asleep. But the pain of his wounds, once more returning, woke him. To go away from the spot was simply impossible. Any movement gave him pain. There was no alternative but stay where he was.
Suddenly Maurice heard little feet on the sand and excited breathing. The coyotes! The smell of blood had made them mad. The mustanger knew they would attack him. He had no weapon but a knife. His rifle and guns had been carried off by his horse. He drew the knife and prepared to defend himself.
Four or five wolves attacked the wounded man. Maurice shook them off, striking out with his knife. Some of the coyotes went away, but new ones appeared.
Suddenly the wounded man heard the sound of hoofs, followed by the loud barking of a dog. He called for help. But the horseman didn't hear him. The horse, or horseman passed on, but the dog it was Тага! — broke through the bushes and rushed at the coyotes. It attacked two of the wolves. A third one could be attacked, but the frightened coyotes ran away.,
The man had no strength left. He drew the cloak over his face to cover it from the sun, and then he fell asleep. The dog lay down at his feet.
A few hours later the mustanger woke up. His faithful dog had saved his life, and would still protect, him against the attacks of coyotes. But it couldn't get him from the spot. And to stay there would be to die of hunger and of the wounds.
'But Тага may take a message to the hut,' he said. 'Come here, old fellow! I want you to play postman for me.'
Maurice found a card in his pocket. No pencil! He could do without it.
He broke a thorn off the closest bush and wrote something with the blood of a coyote. Then he tied the card to the neck of the dog and made it go to the hut.
After a while the mustanger was surrounded by the coyotes again.
This time Maurice had a plan. He took off his cloak and cut a few holes with his knife. Then he tore up his scarf in two parts and used them to tie the cloak to a tree, making a hammock. The mustanger climbed into the hammock. He thought there he was no longer in danger.
There was danger, however, which he had not seen. Very soon he realized he hadn't taken with him enough water. He could not return to the stream now. That would be certain death. It was a torture for the wounded man to see the fresh water of the stream and be unable to reach it. Suddenly he saw the coyotes get to their feet and rush off. What made them leave?
The mustanger turned on his knee and looked around. There were no coyotes. He listened. No sounds.
Maurice got out of the hammock and reached the stream. He once more looked around him and felt danger. He noticed the spotted yellow skin among the leaves. It was the jaguar. It was that dangerous animal that had made the coyotes go away. And now its eyes were on the wounded man. It was ready to attack Maurice.
|A7| Maurice didn't remember where he had lost his rifle and guns.

1.  Period of instability         5. Straggle for the crown
2.   A job for life                    6. Difficult choice
3.   Breaking the tradition      7. Early years of the Queen
4.   Regular Duties                 8. Two Brothers
A.              For more than a thousand years Britain has always had kings or queens except for the ten years between 1649 and 1659. Elizabeth II calls the Windsor family a 'firm'. She thinks of it as a business rather than a family. And the main business of the royal family is... well, probably being royal. And they are paid for it. The Queen is one of the richest women in the world and yet she gets about 8 million pounds a year to be queen. But many people agree that she does her job well and she deserves her salary.
B.  There are hundreds of traditional ceremonies which the Queen has to keep the Queen's Speech at the State Opening of Parliament, 'Maundy money' (the tradition which is almost seven hundred years old) on the Thursday before Easter Sunday, Royal garden parties at Buckingham Palace. Besides, every day the Queen reads official papers from the government and once a week has a meeting with the Prime Minister.
C.   When Elizabeth was bom nobody knew she would be a queen. Her grandfather, King George V, had six children. His eldest son, Edward, was the next in line to be king and Elizabeth's father, Albert, was only second child. Edward lived a good time. He enjoyed women, drank a lot, spent money, liked fashionable clothes. Albert, or Bertie, as his friends called him, was shy, he stammered, and all his life it was difficult for him to make speeches.
D.  As Albert did not expect to become king, he chose the Navy. He married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and they had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. The family lived in a house on Piccadilly with twenty five bedrooms, a library and a room for dances and parties. The girls had a private teacher, they also studied music, dancing, and art. As a child Elizabeth was nicknames Lilibet because that was the way she pronounced her name.
E.   In 1936 King George died. When his coffin with the crown on the top of it was carried through the streets on a horse-drawn carriage, the crown fell. Many people thought it was a bad sign. Indeed, 1936 became the 'year of three kings'. In January, after his father's death, Edward became king. In December he refused from the throne and his younger brother, Bertie took his place.
F.  Many people think that this is one of the most romantic love stories of our century. Handsome and popular king Edward-was in love with an American woman Wallis Simpson and he wanted to marry her. But Wallis divorced twice! The royal family did not like her, the government was against this marriage, so was the Church. And Edward preferred Wallis to the crown. They got married and lived in Paris for most^ their lives.
G.   Elizabeth was only twenty-five when she became Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Like other kings and queens since 1066, she came to Westminster Abbey for the coronation in the royal carriage with its fine horses. But, unlike other kings before her, she wanted the ceremony to be on television. The church and the government didn't welcome the idea. But Elizabeth won. The whole country watched how the heavy gold crown was placed on the young Queen's head.

A legend
A very long time ago, before there was no sun or moon or stars, the great god Viracocha created the world. First he made light and from it he created the sun, moon and stars. After this he carved human figures out of stone. Then he breathed life into them. He made animals too and gave them life, but the people Were most special to him. Before leaving them on the shores of Titicaca he told them, 'Never forget me, worship me always.' But they forgot.
Viracocha created other gods to watch over the people. Inti Illapa, the thunder god, sent down rain to make the land rich. Huallallo, the god of fire, and Pariacaca, the god of water, kept the earth warm. But they were always fighting one another, so the land was either too hot or too cold.
Then the great sun god Inti looked down upon the wild people of the earth, who lived in caves and ate roots and berries. He felt sorry for them. He decided to send one of his sons, Ayar Manco, to teach the wild people how to make tools, farm the land and build places to live.
'I have a task foryou,' he said to his son. 'Look at these people, wild people on earth. You must help them build a great city where they can live together and prosper', the sun god said.       ,
Then he gave his son a golden rod (прут). 'Take this with you,' he said. 'When the rod sinks easily into the soil, that's the right place to build their city.'
So Ayar Manco set off, wearing his golden robes and beautiful jewels. When he arrived at Lake Titicaca, the wild people were amazed. They knelt down to worship their new god.
'Follow me,' he told them. 'I'll lead you to a new and better life.' Ayar Manco looked for a good place to build the city for many days. Every day the wild people watched as he tried to push the golden rod into the soil. But he had no success. Ayar Manco was beginning to lose hope. At last he arrived at a beautiful place situated high in the mountains. Here the golden rod sank easily into the rich soil.
So they started building but work was almost impossible because a very strong wind was blowing. Ayar Manco managed to catch the wind in a cave, rolling a very large rock across the entrance.
But soon Ayar Manco's brother arrived and saw that the wind was locked in the cave. He was angry.
'How could you do this to my friend!' he cried and promised to free the wind at sunset.
Ayar Manco knew that it was impossible to finish building the whole city before sunset, so he made another plan. He caught the sub as it passed over the mountains and tied it to a rock so that it couldn't set. Ayar Manco didn't let the sun and wind go until the very last stone was laid in the city.
And that was how Cuzcb, the first city of the Incas, was built. Ayar Manco decided to stay among the people. He changed his name to Manco Capac and became the first ruler of the powerful Incan Empire.
